Bindegewebsmassage

Bindegewebsmassage is a simple, elegant technique applied in a short, 30-minute session, providing deep relaxation and profound results. The word bindegewebsmassage means "connective tissue massage" in German (the technique may be referred to as “CTM”). This precise technique works directly with the autonomic reflexes to induce a deep state of relaxation and calm in the body, improving well being and organ function with relatively few contraindications. The results are often quite notable, and can be even more profound with a series of sessions. It can be combined with integrative massage in a 60 or 90 minute session.

Developed in Germany by Elizabeth Dicke, Bindegewebsmassage is widely prescribed for a variety of health applications in Germany. Clinical trials have shown its effectiveness in reducing pain and depression and improving quality of life. It is a very effective treatment for menstrual cramps, significantly reducing pain in 90% of cases. It helps to improve digestive health and is quite effective at reducing visceral pain and intestinal cramping. It is an effective treatment for migraines, especially if performed at the outset of symptoms. An extended version of this treatment can improve breathing and be helpful for bronchial and lung conditions such as asthma. A series of preliminary explorations treating ongoing shortness of breath after a COVID infection with Bindegewebsmassage have also appeared promising.

Bindegewebsmassage involves a series of precise dragging strokes applied directly on the skin at the sacrum, posterior pelvis, back, and upper chest. These strokes effectively target specific dermatomes to calm the nerves that serve the abdominal and pelvic organs. Autonomic reflexes result in relaxation of the smooth muscle tissue and vasodilation in response to the treatment, effectively increasing blood flow through the abdominal and pelvic organs.

This treatment is performed with the client clothed and seated beside the massage table, resting forward on pillows. Clients are asked to wear pants with a stretchy waistband and a shirt with an open collar or neckline, to allow access to the lower back/back of the pelvis and the upper chest.

Bindegewebsmassage is safe for many people to receive.  However, there are some contraindications for the technique so please discuss any medical conditions you may have with your therapist.
